From an 1896 Factory to an Automotive Temple: An Exclusive Interview with the Founder of Apparatus

What happens when a love for classic cars meets the audacity to turn a 19th-century sawmill into a private, design-driven club? The answer is Apparatus.

In this article the founder Karolis Matusevičius takes us behind the scenes of a project that blends heritage, design and business vision. Get ready to discover how a century-old building became the ideal stage for collectible cars, corporate events and above all a new idea of functional luxury.

From Dream to Vision

“First of all, my partner and I were collectors. The real turning point came when we realised how hard it is to keep a whole fleet of classics in perfect shape. So we asked ourselves: how many others struggle with the same issues?”

From the outset the team ruled out building from scratch: “We were looking for soul, for authentic vibes.”
Five years of work—guided more by intuition than by previous experience have turned Apparatus Lumber Room into a multifunctional hub: an open-view workshop and event venue under the same roof.

The Greatest Challenge

No one on the team had ever managed a project like this. Every decision, layout, workflows, systems, was born of imagination, gut feeling and advice gathered from colleagues across Europe. The result is a home where classics and supercars live inside a classic shell of their own: a poetic dialogue between contemporary mechanics and century-old walls.

A Club That Reaches Beyond Engines

Lumber Room is “a place for cars and for drivers,” but it is also open to those who simply love beautiful spaces. The goal is to share car culture with a wider audience by hosting corporate and private events, turning passion into a shared experience.

The magic lies in the encounter between 19th-century industrial architecture and rolling masterpieces: “It’s thrilling to see timeless cars parked inside a timeless building.” Exposed brick, iron beams and the filtered light of old windows create a stage that amplifies every vehicle’s value.

Why DEA Italian Worklab

To outfit the visible workshop, the team needed furniture that met strict technical standards and impeccable aesthetics. After weighing several options, Karolis Matusevičius met DEA Italian Worklab and never looked back: “Materials, ergonomics and Italian design were exactly what I had in mind.”
DEA solutions deliver professional-grade organisation and durability while blending seamlessly into Apparatus Lumber Room’s heritage context.

Colour Personalisation: RAL 7022

“Our entire design palette revolves around this colour; the workshop had to follow the same code.”

DEA matched the request to coat fronts, sides and handles in RAL 7022 Umbra Grey, a deep shade with a warm undertone that dialogues with the building’s burnished metals and restored wood. Powder coating ensures perfect colour consistency and the chemical resistance essential in a workshop.

“Being able to customise every module was crucial: we wanted every corner to speak the same design language.”

Workshop as Brand Statement

For Karolis Matusevičius, a mechanical workspace is more than functional; it’s an identity element. “Working on cars of extraordinary beauty requires an equally refined environment. In an orderly, well-lit workshop even the smallest flaw stands out immediately making it easier to guarantee quality and speed.” The result is a space where clients, friends and visitors can admire the technicians’ work without breaking the spell.

Conclusion

Apparatus Lumber Room proves that when passion, vision and craftsmanship meet, even an 1896 sawmill can be reborn as an automotive temple.
